The CPAP Alternative

Imagine no more irritating mask and turning off that loud noise forever! No more bloated ballooning feeling. You can wake up and look in the mirror without seeing your mask lines or your watery and puffy eyes. Your nose and throat won’t feel crusted and scratchy.

Others complain how their CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) interferes with sex and intimacy. Some feel claustrophobic or strangled by the tubes. There is additional bed time required to set up and maintain the CPAP machine and associated apparatus. Traveling with the CPAP machine and equipment requires more luggage and if going abroad an electrical converter.

While CPAP is the most common and effective treatment for sleep apnea, many people will not put up with the associated problems and will refuse to use it. Fortunately, there is ‘the CPAP alternative’. You don’t have to choose between the dangers of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and the inconvenience of CPAP therapy. The CPAP alternative for most patients is oral appliance therapy. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has come to ‘recommend oral appliances for managing snoring and sleep apnea in patients with mild and moderate sleep apnea and those severe cases where a patient refuses to use CPAP or is CPAP intolerant’. Additionally they stated that ‘oral appliances should be fitted by qualified dental personnel who are trained and experienced in the overall care of oral health, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ-jaw joint), dental occlusion (the bite) and associated oral structures (muscles of chewing)’.

Dr. Steinberg’s qualifications and the Academy of Sleep Medicine’s recommendations parallel each other. See Meet the Doctor tab or www.DentalCareAtItsFinest.com for more information.

Please go to the ORAL APPLIANCES tab for more information on ‘the CPAP alternative’.
